What Is AntiFreeze & Why Should I Care?
“Antifreeze” is a chemical, primarily consisting of ethylene glycol, which when mixed with water serves to lower the freezing point and raise the boiling point of the mixture. Traditionally, the combination of antifreeze and water is known as “coolant”. As opposed to air-cooled vehicles which rely on fan-driven air blowing over engine components, water-cooled engines use a radiator, water pump, thermostat, heater core, hoses, and passageways within the engine.
Basically, it’s what you put into your automotive’s radiator so that your cooling systems don’t freeze in the cold weather. It helps maintain temperatures in the vehicle. Without it, the car would literally cease to work. Thank you for protecting our cars! When it gets very cold and the radiator isn’t strong enough, the radiator can expand and break. This causes minimal to massive damage to multiple areas of the car.
To keep routine maintenance, it is important to flush the system and change it every 3 years. You replace the other liquids in your car, this is just as important.
Unless antifreeze containers state on their labels that they’ve already been pre-mixed 50/50 with water during the manufacturing process, you’re getting “full strength” and must dilute it with water yourself. Typically, full strength provides more value when purchased – even after the cost of distilled water is factored in. If you prefer the convenience of not having to worry about mixing things accurately yourself, 50/50 mix is the way to go. (via Carid.com)
If temperatures in your area regularly drop to minus 34 degrees Fahrenheit, then a 60-40 or 70-30 antifreeze to distilled water ratio is necessary. (Via KnowHow)
